Donate to charities by using Messenger

Microsoft and the Windows Live Messenger team are doing something very cool to help us all donate money to charity in a very easy, low impact way.

Donate money to charities by simply using Windows Live Messenger!

All you have to do is add a special emoticon tag to your “display name” in Messenger and from then on, Microsoft will donate a portion of the ad revenue generated by your usage of Windows Live Messenger

You can choose from only from 9 different charities, but the charities they chose cover such a broad spectrum that I’d be surprised if everyone couldn’t find at least one that stands out to them.

What do you need to do?

  1. Download and install Messenger 8.1
  2. Add the specific emoticon code to your display name that corresponds to the charity you want to support. For example, you’d add ‘*unicef’ (without the quotes) to support UNICEF.  See the end of my blog entry for the full list of codes.  Your display name will then have the special “IM” emoticon displayed, looking like this:
  3. Send and receive IMs!
