"While iTunes handles this really well..."
I'm afraid I have to disagree on that. In the newer versions of iTunes, Sound Check seems to have become so inaccurate that it has become useless. The only thing it does is scramble the relative volumes of songs in a pretty much random manner. It is most obvious when comparing the Sound Check adjustment with ReplayGain, but it is also very noticeable when listening, because the error in the adjustment often exceeds 3dB or even 6dB. Songs still sound too loud or silent, it are just different songs than with SC disabled.

Mac OS X users who are familiar with the Terminal can apply ReplayGain to their MP3s in a similar way as described in this article (click my name for a link to the required software).

Does this require Sound Check in iTunes to be enabled? I can't get iTunes to replicate the replay gain data I formatted in mp3tag.
