Hi Trevin,

I am going through the same process. I too have a lot of email on Yahoo, but I leave it on the Yahoo server. I wasn't clear when you wrote,

"Turns out that since I’m a Yahoo premium subscriber, they unlock the POP3 interface for me. Gmail provided a really easy way for me to specify my Yahoo credentials and all my email was imported over the course of a few hours as it processed it in chunks of several hundred emails."

I am also a premium subscriber, but don't understand the migration process here. Do I need to first download all my email via POP3 to Outlook or Thunderbird, and then upload it via IMAP??

Thanks,
Jim

Austin:

Not sure why you're getting duplicate emails. When Gmail downloads messages via POP3 interface, by default it will delete the messages. Make sure that you do not have "Leave a copy of retrieved message on the server" enabled in your Gmail settings for your yahoo account.

Regarding Gmail's IMAP interface, I don't personally use it so can't give you any advice. Sorry!

Trevin, thanks for a really informative well-written article. BTW, I am Yahoo Premium subscriber. I have had so may problems with Yahoo mail. The final straw was when it started spewing 3 month old emails into my bulk folder and then more emails into my Blackberry device. So a couple of days ago I set up a gmail account, and asked Gmail to download my message via yahoo's POP3. It did it only for new emails, but then Yahoo started sending it duplicates of old emails. Then I head Gmail's IMAP servers were acting up, so that new email would not appear on my Blackberry. Aagh! Any advice you have would be most welcome. Thanks in advance.

Sandra, if you already are a Yahoo Premium subscriber, you can get Gmail to download those messages via POP3. Have you tried that?

Thanks four all your tips. I've also decided to move from Yahoo to Gmail after 5 years. Miss my folders!
More than a comment, I have a question on Yahoo Premium and folders.
I have valuable information on 2000 plus emails in my folders. By Info I mean messages, not attachments. I need to save them and do not have the time to arhaically go message by message, copying info, pasting it into Word documents. And I must have them in my computer. So, I do not want to FF to my new Gmail account. Does this makes sense?
I need to migrate my folders, which I realize are not real folders, to my Documents in my computer. Please help.

i think gmail's mail handling paradigm (a.k.a. labeling) is easier to grok for people who have never seen an email client before
try google reader, where blog articles virtually become incoming mail and you will see what i mean...

Great Article. I am also frustrated about Gmail Mobile's lack of support for Google Apps domain. I tried to seek a solution online, only to find out that not many people complains about it.

One gmail tip that I wish share is that gmail is great for storing email archives. You can migrate all your old emails, with an IMAP/POP server serving as middleman, to your gmail account. It is so cool to be able to utilize google's searching power on all of your old emails.
